Cultures all over the world have waxed eloquently in artistic works about the metaphorical power behind burning--behind fire, as a tool of destruction--to let go of the past, or something that's holding you back.

But sometimes you don't need or want to burn something away forever--you just have to put it on hold for a bit.

  1. On a piece of paper, record the strong emotions you're experiencing that you would like to have a break from.
  2. Take a bowl or other container that will endure time in the freezer. Fill it with water.
  3. Place the note in the water-filled container, and place the container into the freezer.
  4. While the note is freezing, and for however long you keep it in the freezer, remind yourself that your emotional experience of this particular event is being temporarily paused. It is placed on hold. It can resume later.
  5. When you are ready, take the container out of the freezer.
  6. Set the container on the counter at room temperature. Get startled when the ice starts exploding. Place the container in the refrigerator so that it can thaw gently back down.
  7. By this point, do you even remember what you wrote on the paper?
    1. If you can't remember, let it drain away.
    2. If you do remember--vividly and painfully--break the ice up into small chunks that can be place in a blender. Make a smoothie. Feed your kitchen sink or trash bin.
